Simply put, FTP is the average number of watts that a rider can sustain over an hour. Ideally, it refers to a steady effort, not the up-and-down levels you might see looking at your power from a cyclocross race or super-hilly ride.
FTP is typically tested over 20 minutes on an indoor trainer with power measuring capabilities (ie. smart trainer) like the ones we have here at Endurance House.
It’s a number that you can track, so you can see improvements as you test regularly and work to improve it with training workouts designed around your specific FTP.
